Description

Gresca blends contemporary sensibility with traditional typographic craft into a versatile family for brand identities and editorial design. It comprises Display and Text, each from Light to Black, plus a Variable Font.

Gresca Display is a stylized take on Modern (Didone) serifs, running Ultracompressed to Condensed — built to shout across a magazine masthead, with a Curly alternate (ss01) for extra personality.

Gresca Text is a slab serif with its own twist: a low-contrast Light through to a high-contrast Black, sturdy and even-toned for long columns, giving the family its editorial backbone.
Germany, Italy and England each pushed narrow, condensed serifs in their own direction — plus a scatter of in-between models: grotesques, mediaevals, egyptians, clarendons. What struck Laura wasn't any single face but the traits they kept sharing: long ascenders, tight apertures, simplified serifs, moderate contrast, vertical rhythm, extreme economy of space. No single model — a whole territory. Gresca grew out of studying that shared language, not any one source.

And the name says it all: in Catalan, "gresca" means ruckus, festive commotion — joyful, shared noise. That's the spirit of Rock Laietà, the Catalan countercultural rock scene of the 1970s (golden age 1974–78), blending rock, rumba and jazz sung in Catalan during Spain's transition to democracy, when singing in Catalan was itself an act of assertion. It served as inspiration for Gresca's specimen, even thought it is an editorial workhorse typeface family.
