Rachid Taha
Rachid Taha (18 September 1958-12 September 2018) was an Algerian singer and activist based in Franc described as “sonically adventurous”. His music was influenced by many different styles including rock, electronic, punk and raï. In the late 1970s, Taha founded the nightclub called The Rejects or, in French, Les Refoulés, where he would spin mashups of Arabic pop classics over Led Zeppelin, Bo Diddley and Kraftwerk backbeats.

Lili Boniche
Lili Boniche (Élie Boniche, April 29, 1922-March 6, 2008) was an Algerian born French singer of Andalusian-Arab music. Boniche was the heir to an erudite, centuries-long tradition of Algerian song and a pillar of Franco-Arab music. Born into a Sephardic Jewish family in the Casbah area of Algiers, Boniche was a child prodigy who taught himself to play his father’s mandola at the age of seven. Later as an in-demand singer throughout France in the 1940s and during wartime. Boniche incorporated the tango, paso doble and mambo into his repertoire, especially while entertaining the troops.

Gnawa Diffusion
Gnawa Diffusion is an Algerian Gnawa music band based in Grenoble, France. The group’s lead singer, Amazigh (literally meaning ‘Free Man’ in Tamazight), is the son of the Algerian writer and poet Kateb Yacine. Although there is a strong Gnawa influence, the band is noted for its mix of reggae and roots music.

Omar Metioui
Omar Metioui (Tangiers, 1962) is a Moroccan classical musician. Metioui originally trained as a pharmacist, then concentrated on performance of the oud or Arabic lute, as well as performance as a vocalist. He has recorded with his own Ensemble Omar Metioui, and is cofounder in 1994 with Spanish musicologist, flautist and architect Eduardo Paniagua, dedicated to the recovery of medieval Andalusian music.

Description

Qandus Latin is part of the Qandus multiscript font family consisting of a modern typographic interpretation of the unique Maghribi calligraphic style handwritten by al-Qandusi. The concept was to design three styles beyond the difference in weight, extracted from the different textures of Qandusi’s manuscripts (Regular, Medium and Dark) and highlight three constructions: The Solid, the Fluid and the Original a mixture of both forms. The Latin subfamily takes Arabic as the starting point and explores the reversed horizontal stress based on rotation, the limits between calligraphy and drawing; 
and the exuberance of the letterforms.

Qandus was developed within the framework of the Khatt Foundation’s type design research project: Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghrib (2015-2017), which curator is Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès. The designers are Laura Meseguer (Latin), Kristyan Sarkis (Arabic), and Juan Luis Blanco (Tifinagh).
The strong graphic language of the typeface design emphasizes and explores the variety and visual potential of the Maghribi style.
